Your Theme Song

I related this assignment to my noir character, John Brown. This was worth 4 points, so it was kind of difficult to complete it.

I done this assignment with Logic Pro X, and tried to show his loneliness.

Screen Shot 2015-02-20 at 12.10.13 PM

I put rain sound so it can give sadness and loneliness and closing door sound so he is coming back from his work. And then, I put clock sound so it shows that the house is really quit and no one is around.

John Brown does not hang out with people, so he comes home right after his works are done. He thought he is okay without any friends and family, but deep inside his mind, he is missing people and feel lonely when he is alone in his house. Loneliness is placed in his mind for long time, he cannot feel it or recognize it.

Spooky Sounds

This assignment (4 points) was to create a song that is combination of spooky sounds. Instead of using Audacity, I used Logic Pro X to complete this assignment.

Here’s what I made.

It was really difficult assignment and I had no idea how to start. So, I just sat in front of computer and try to come up with idea. First I did was coming up with the sounds that I think it’s spooky. I found some sound from Logic Pro X and put it together.

I found so many sounds and placed them where I want to put. I put Small Child Giggle at the end and faded out so it can give the listeners feeling that it is end of the song.

I really enjoyed this assignment but in the other hand, I kind of stressed out to find the sounds those are fit in the the subject it is looking for, but I’m satisfied with this out come.

Fifth Week Summary

This week was FANTASTIC! I really loved doing all the assignments were given. I was interested in design (my minor is digital studies) but did not take any classes those are related to the design so I learned a lot this week. From completing DesignBlitz, I learned about concepts of design and how they effect the final product. It is important to know how to use each concept effectively and containing strong story or meaning behind it.

Completing DeignBlitz was harder than I thought. I had to research for some concepts to understand fully. I had to think about the concepts all the time to find the objects. Whenever I take the photos, I was not sure what I’m taking it. I had to think more and more before I upload it to my blog. I was really shocked that when Professor Groom mentioned me in twitter and said I really did great job on it.

The daily creates and design assignments were pretty easier than I thought and enjoyable. Before I choose what assignments I want to do for this week, everything seems to be really difficult. Also, one of the assignment had to be greater than 4 points, which is much difficult than other below 3 point. However, when I finally chose 4 assignments and started it, it was not that hard and really fun to do it. I really loved the assignments I chose. It was really fun to think and create new things and see the result made me proud.

Nothing did not drive me crazy. Every assignments were really fun and enjoyable. :)

Noir Film Design

Among the choices of three: Double Indemnity, Blade Runner, or The Big Lebowski, I watched Double Indemnity. In the film, it was really hard to tell the time and the place. Since it is a black and white film, I could know the time by shadow and the streetlight.

As you can see above pictures, the shape of the built environments can be notice when the scene is taken in the afternoon; however, when it was taken during dark night, you are able to see only the streetlights and the lights from the car.

Almost at the beginning of the sense, the angle of the camera was from top to bottom, which gave me feeling of some gradation rhythm.

Screen Shot 2015-02-15 at 5.52.41 PM

All the desks are same size and placed in repetition rhythm, but because of the angle of the camera, it has gradation rhythm and draw the viewers eyes toward to the back of the room.

Contrast was used to make an actor to be focal point and let the viewers to show emotion more closely.

It is not totally contrast color, like black and white, but setting the background as dark and gave light only to actor makes him to be focal point and the viewers’ attention in only to his face expression.

There were several film noir elements I found through out this movie.

1. The “Venetian blind” effect

2. Lighting from one side

The Vignelli Canon

I really enjoyed the reading. Since I minor in Digital Studies, it was helpful for me to know some ideas about design. The design is visually powerful, designers cannot stand design that is weak in concept, form, color, or texture. I think Massimo Vignelli well explained that. There are many possibilities to get a powerful expression: difference of scale in the same page such as size of fonts or bold typed fonts, three dimensional design and using different textures and materials. I really agree with his thought. The statements that he made about this topic are what I use whenever I do art work. Those basic concepts are simple but have very strong effect to viewers to draw their eyes to the focal point.

He stated that to stick to one or two type sizes at the most, and if necessary, use other devices like bold, light, roman and italic to differentiate. I do not agree with this statement. The simple can be powerful and easy to understand author’s point, but I think it is necessary to let viewers to do work and figure it out in their own way. As they try to figure out it, time that they are staring at would be much longer and since they are think deeply it would be more impressed on viewer’s mind. Simple design, the viewers could just looked at it for a second because the purpose of the author is predictable.

This reading was really helpful for me to know the information about design, but some examples were outdated so I wish there were some more recent examples. But it was really useful time to know the concepts that I did not know before.

Copyright and Creative Commons

I was really surprised when I see the this assignment because I learned about copyright in Digital Approaches to Fine Arts class on Monday. However I still do not fully understand what is copyright law but I think that the purpose of this law is protecting creativeness of author. Since I’m taking most of my classes that need creativeness (Midi Composition, Digital Approaches to Fine Arts, and Digital Storytelling), I know how hard is it to making any kind of stuffs and how long it takes to come up with an idea and doing based on it. Using without permission would probably make me angry and especially when people make money from it. However, in the other hand, the original work would can be known to people if re-creating the original work become famous. It can be one of the method to make the piece to well known to people.

To avoid against law, it is really important to know what is fair use. Fair use allows people to use part or whole of copyrighted work without copyright holder’s permission. Based on this definition, it seems like all works can be used without holder’s permission; however very important facts to know is how court know if a use is fair. There were 4 points that the author pointed out in the article. In my opinion, the reason why the copyright holder’s and user are going court is mostly related to money, which categorized under purpose of use. And court ask “Will you make money from the new work, or is it intended for nonprofit, educational, or personal purpose?” Mostly noncommercial purposes is fair uses but commercial uses can be fair uses. However, giving credit and using right cited to work has to be done for appreciating other’s idea and time for creating the works.

The term “Creative Commons” is first time I heard. Creative Commons is a nonprofit organization that enables the sharing and use of creativity and knowledge through free legal tools. It provides simple, standardized way to give the public permission to share and use work under the conditions of creator’s choice. It also let creator to change the copyright terms from all rights reserved to some rights reserved.

Since we are living in Digital Age, it is really easy to find other people’s works on internet and use it and make some change into it. It was really helpful time to know about Copyright Law, Fair Use, and Creative Commons. I still do not know exactly, I think it would need more time to fully understand it.

Design Blitz

This week, I had to explore of design blitz. I knew some concepts those were listed on the website, but finding the objects, ads, sign, etc was really harder than I thought. Whenever I walked around the campus or street, I tried to find what would fit under any of concepts. And these four pictures are what I got.

1. Dominance

20150212_114731

This is a black bean on tons of white rice. When I was going to make cooked rice, I scooped some rices and black beans from the ziplock bag. After I scooped it I just looked at them and figured out that a black bean is focal point in this picture, because that the shape of the rices and bean is kind of similar (oval shape) but different color. Since dominance is relies on contrast (without it, it would look same), it creates a visual hierarchy in any designs. In a opposite, lack of dominance between elements in the design would compete with each other and make viewers hard to figure out the main point of the design. However, too many dominance (creating more than 3 dominance) would to much and make viewers to not figure out the purpose of the design.

2. Balance

20150212_112340

There are two types of balance: symmetrical balance and asymmetrical balance. The object I found is symmetrical balance, a chair. As it is symmetrical balance it able to stand stably with no shaking and make people to sit on it comfortably. Symmetrical balance is also known as formal balance because it creates a mirror image about a vertical or horizontal axis. This concept create the results look formal organized and orderly.

3. Rhythm

20150213_125740

There are three types of rhythm: repetition, alternation, and gradation. The picture I took is crosswalk which have repetition rhythm. Repetition rhythm is predictable and repeat same thing over and over again so there is no fun and interesting going on design. However, the picture of crosswalk seems like gradation rhythm which create patterns through a progression of regular steps. As using this rhythm, it create the feeling of distance. The gradation rhythm is more interest and leads visual tensions to direct the viewers’  eyes along the progression, and it tends to direct the eyes along to progression which mean that it would capture viewers’ attention more effectively than repetition rhythm.

4. Symbol

20150213_130053

As you notice, it the letter M with yellow colored symbolize the McDonald’s. When I walked cross the campus in dark nigh, I saw just yellow lightening M in a distance. I immediately knew that is representation of McDonald’s. So I walked to McDonald’s next day afternoon and took it. The symbol can be logo and logo can become symbol of company. The symbol can be really simple or complex. But the very important point is that it has to have strong impact so whoever see it first, would able to tell what it represent next time they see it. In my opinion, this is perfect example of symbol. As this symbol is well known through worldwide, everyone know whenever they see the yellow M, it symbolize the McDonald’s.

You’re Invited!

I related this assignment (3 points) to my noir character which was a creating invitation card to him. (John Brown)

invitation copy

This invitation card is from John Brown’s step-father to invited people to his wife, also John Brown’s mother, Mary  Brown. After John Brown got this invitation, he just threw away and decided to not to go. He just does not want to his family. He have been damaged from his family and his family members knew that he would not come but sent the invitation to grab a little bit of hope for coming.

To complete this assignment, I downloaded the invitation template and uploaded to Adobe Photoshop. And I wrote some mentioning of purpose of the invitation and place and time that party will occur. I saved the file as JEPG so I will able to upload it to my blog.

Advertisement Using A Cartoon Character

This assignment (3 points) was creating advertisement using a cartoon character. First cartoon I came up with was Spongebob advertising a sponge. But I think is to obvious so I changed cartoon character. I came up with Spiderman advertising a bug spray. It would be great to show that the bug spray that Spiderman is advertising would not miss any bugs that you try to catch. I put the Spiderman as background and put a bug spray in his right hand and put some spider webs on to it.

Spiderman-cartoon-wallpaper

I put a quote from Spiderman at the corner that would help the viewers to have some belief onto the product that he is advertising.
