Week Seven Summary

Week seven is done! I really enjoyed this week with creating radio show! I can’t wait to hear what other people’s think about our radio show and what they have done! It took several hours to edit the radio and put the bumper, commercial, and others, but it was great experiment to develop the skill and learn new things.
Because we have to complete the radio show, there wasn’t lots of assignments. Only three daily creates to complete.

First assignment I did was creating a story with 5 selected emojis. I thought that I have to use the emojis in order so I used in order those were lined up. The story I came up with was kind of daily life (going to library and cafe) so it seems so stale story, but I spent long time to create this story. I enjoyed making the story. Creating a story with emojis that I use almost everyday was clever idea.

Second daily create was creating Deep Space 106. Last assignments was creating a poster using teal blue and orange. I really loved those two assignments. I think I’m visual person so I enjoy creating pictures. So I was glad that we had two visual related assignments.

Radio show progress! Everything flew smoothly, and had nothing interrupted our radio! Since we had been using Audacity for a long time, editing the recording voice and putting commercials, bumper, and sound effects were kind of easy but took long time. But it was great experiment and seeing classmates were exited. I can’t wait to hear other classmates’s radio show.

These are I commented on other peoples’ daily creates for this week. It was really fun to watch the assignments that I did not do and seeing what they’ve done.

Week eight: SPRING BREAK!!

Radio Show Progress #2

After we had meet on Saturday, we decided to meet on this Thursday to record our voice. But campus was closed for snow day! I was so happy for cancellation of classes, but I worried for the recording because we was going to meet in ITCC. But luckily, ITCC was able to open with our ID card. So we meet in the ITCC and record our voiced based on the script that Lesya wrote. The story was perfect and funny. We used Audacity to keep track of our voice. We read script several time so we can get the voice that we like. After finishing recording, we decided to divide editing parts. Leanna and I are going to edit the recorded voice in order and Lesya is going to change pitch and get rid of the noisy sound. After that, Amy is going to put background music, bumper, and commercial! And after this all process, our radio show is complete!

Everything went pretty well, there was any problem or difficult thing that interrupt our radio show. I was really worried about this, but I was blessed with meeting Amy, Lesya and Leanna and becoming a group with them. I can’t wait to hear other group’s radio! I would be really fun! :)

Teal Blue and Orange

Blue and orange are (still everywhere) – it’s the color combination that spells “action movie”.
Make (or modify) and image to make it suitable for an action film poster using primarily teal blue and orange hues.

Wolverine Movie Poster

When I saw this assignment, I looked for an action movie poster. Then, I found “Wolverine” poster that would stand out more if I use color of teal blue and orange. So I set the background as orange and filled Wolverine as teal blue so it looks more cold and frightening character.

Sixth Week Summary

Already week six?! The week that I most afraid of had come. I’m not good at making audio sounds and not enjoy recording my voice, but creating a radio show? I already stressed out. The assignments that we have to complete were seem little compare to past weeks. But radio show was waiting for me.

On Monday, I listened to ds106 radio show and got along on Twitter. Radio was about ‘Strangers on a Train’ by Alfred Hitchcock. I really enjoyed this show. The one thing I was kind of disappointed by that there weren’t lots of participants on Twitter so whenever I missed the conversations, I just missed it because no one is writing down. So I googled for script and get the idea what was going on.
<ds106 radio Reflection>

On Tuesday, I searched for group for a radio show. It was not difficult to find the group members because my roommate introduced me her friend Amy Elizabeth who is taking this course so I asked her for permission to get into her group. She and her group members said okay to join the group and became group called ‘The Alpacas.’

On Wednesday, I started to do my personal assignments, the audio assignments from Assignment Bank. I chose three assignments: Your Theme Song, Spooky Sounds, and Familiar Sounds.
I had hard time complete the two assignments; creating theme song and spooky sounds. Instead of using Audacity, I used Logic Pro X program and use some loops. There were lots of sounds for me to use it but I could not start. I had no idea what I want to create and which sounds should I use. So I just played almost every sounds and then got some ideas from the sound. So the process was inverse; listen to sounds first and get the idea.
Your Theme Song assignment, I related to my noir character’s personality. I tried to make a song that would represent his loneliness in his deep inside of mind. I think the final was better than I expected. After I uploaded, I was able to figure out that the flow is a bit off from the comments. Later when I have to create a song I would be more careful and make flow to be more natural.
Spooky Sounds!!! Most difficult assignment I ever had! I took so long to complete about one minute song. I used also Logic Pro X for this assignment. It was same process as creating theme song; listen first then get the idea. I set the background music first then place the sounds. I tried to use many different sounds I can because individual people have different hearing point where they get scared. For few weeks before, on Audio week, I create an emotional song that represent happiness. On that, I used a child giggling sound. But in the other hand, when you hear giggling sound in the dark or scary movie, it chills your spine. So I put it at the end.
Most easy and enjoyable assignment, recording familiar sounds. I also related this to my character. I recorded the sounds of daily morning life, walking into kitchen, progress of making coffee and search for food to eat. The recorded sound was pretty clear. It was really interest to hear the sounds that I make everyday.

Personal assignments are done. I started to working on the radio show. I made a logo for ds106 radio by using Adobe Photoshop. Whenever I look the the logos, they are very simple but capture my eyes so I can remember it easy. So I tried to make it simple as I can but represent the radio. I think the the outcome was pretty good and I liked it! :)
<Radio Show Promo>

On Saturday, my group members got along together and share the ideas for radio show. Each individual had really great ideas and well structured plot so it was not that hard to brainstorming. During first meeting, we came up with the plot and role for each one. The story was based on the characters and concepts of noir. I think that the result of radio show would be really great! I am really looking forward to hear our radio show!
<Radio Show Progress>

Since from first week to last week, the assignments were so many, I did not have time to enjoy others works. But this week, I had few minutes to look at what other people had done and make comments on them. Also, many people commented on my posts and critiqued it, I was able to see the thing I should change to make it better.
Here are the comments I made:

Radio Show Progress

This week and next week, we have to create a radio show for ds106 radio. This week is to form a group and plan for it. To find a group member, I went on Twitter and searching for a group to join in. remembered that my roommate told me that her friend, Amy Elizabeth is taking this course, too, so I asked her for join in her group. Thankfully, Amy and group members, Leanna Epps and Lesya Melnychenko led me get into group and now I’m part of the group called ‘The Alpacas.’ Before we meet, we communicate on Twitter and share the ideas that we have and some promo that we should include. After we shared basic idea we tried to find the best time to meet and talk about details, like plot, script, sounds, commercials, etc. Then we decided to meet on Saturday afternoon. During the meeting, we used gmail ‘Invitation to edit’ to share and write together on the same page, so everyone has same informations. Our focus was on the noir characters and create the story based on the informations about them. After we completed the plot, we divided the role. Lesya has most of the idea for plot and Amy is good at writing so they are going to write a script for radio show. Leanna and I got to choose dramatic background musics and make commercials. To create the music, we are going to use Audacity since we have been using it for couple of weeks and choose musics mostly from ‘free sound’ or youtube. Since we just gather some ideas, everything went smoothly and had nothing difficult. But I’m kind of worry about next week. We have to record and edit it so difficult parts have not come yet. Hopefully everything would go smoothly as this week.

Radio Show Promo

This week is to working on producing a radio show. So, I had to make poster/bumper, sticker/logo, etc. Since I made a bumper in the past when we were working on audio assignments, so I made logo for s106 radio.

radio logoI used Adobe Photoshop to create this logo. On the white background, I typed ‘ds106 radio’ and make effect on them. Instead of just horizontal line, I changed to wave shape text, so it looks like the sound is coming out from radio. I put the antenna with radio waves are coming out of it above the text, so it kinds of look like radio. I thought that the logo has to be simple and readable, so I tried to put together simple as I can.

Bigger version:

Familiar Sound

This assignment was to create a song using recorded familiar sounds. This was 2 points project, so it was easy and fun to do it. Also, I related this to my noir character, John Brown, it’s his morning life sounds.

I used Audacity to complete this assignments. First, I recorded the sound of the slippers that John Brown walks to kitchen and then he boils water to make a cup of coffee. After he mix coffee well, he looks for some foods to eat with it. He opens the cabinet and refrigerator and finds an apple and wash it in sink. He goes to the table and drag a chair and sits on it.

I did this assignment in the morning, so I just did what I usually do in morning but hit record button on Audacity.

I really enjoyed doing this assignment and it was kind of interesting to hear the sounds that I hear every days.

DS106 Radio Reflection

I listened to ds106 radio on Monday, it was about ‘Stranger on a Train’ by Alfred Hitchcock. The story began with Haines meeting a stranger, Bruno on a train and planning perfect murders, Bruno is going to kill Haines’s wife, Miriam and Haines will kill Bruno’s father. It would be perfect murder because they have no identifiable motive for the crimes. And story goes on. I think since it was played on Monday, there weren’t many listeners who are participating in live-twitter so I was not able to read the sentences that I missed but in the other hand, I was able to focus more on to radio.

Here are what I wrote during ds106 radio was played:

There were many sound effects, among those I really liked the train sound and crying cricket sounds. Those seem real and fitted well into the plot and character’s conversations.

I really enjoyed this radio and one thing I learned from this story. “Don’t talk to strangers!”
